Vision Care Professionals
Optometrist
The optometrist is a health care professional trained and state licensed
to provide primary eye care services. These services include:
- Comprehensive eye health and vision examinations
- Diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and vision disorders
- Detection of general health problems
- Prescribing of glasses, contact lenses, low-vision rehabilitation; vision therapy and medications
- Performing surgical procedures
- Counseling of patients regarding their surgical alternatives and vision needs as related to their occupations, avocations and lifestyle
The optometrist has completed pre-professional undergraduate education
in a college or university and four years of professional education at a
college of optometry, leading to the doctorate of optometry (O.D.)
degree.
Opthamologist
An opthamologist is an Eye M.D. — a medical doctor who specializes in eye and
vision care. Eye M.D.s are specially trained to provide the full spectrum of
eye care, from prescribing glasses and contact lenses to complex and delicate
eye surgery. Many Eye M.D.s are also involved in scientific research into the
causes and cures of eye diseases and vision problems.
Optician
A professional in the field of finishing and fitting eyeglass lenses, frames and
contact lenses. An optician turns your doctor's prescription in the glasses or
contact lenses you need to make your vision the best it can be. An optician may
also dispense low vision aids and artificial eyes.
